Half-Hour Portrait

Here is the big sister to yesterday's little boy. I'm so glad she wore her hair in a side braid; I like the asymmetry. Beautiful kids.

Half-Hour Portrait

Some likenesses just come so easily. I didn't realize how serious this little boy was about his portrait sitting until, a few minutes in, he said, "Sorry, I have to blink!" (I reassured him that blinking and relaxing were fine.)

Half-Hour Portrait

I often don't know ahead of time what someone sitting for a portrait is going to look like, which means I get nice surprises. This beautiful woman was fun to paint, with her wide-set eyes and hint of a smile.

Half-Hour Portrait

I'll be putting up recent portraits for the next little while. First off, this beautiful, poised girl who was such a pleasure to paint, with her dark, expressive eyes. (I'm posting from my cell phone, so these next several posts may have a slightly different format.)

Croton Evening

Bidding starts at $150

I always try to get gas at the station in the distance in this painting, because it’s up high and has a really nice view to the south. (Unfortunately, they’ve recently installed “gas station TV,” which almost cancels out the view.)

Minnewaska Pines

I’m happy to be painting a landscape again! This is from the Day of the Twisted Ankle this fall. As we were limping back down the mountain, this spot struck me as especially beautiful. So I took time out from whining to take some pictures. I’m glad I did.

The bowl was a gift years ago, and I’ve always loved it. The garlic is from the farmers market and is nice and strong.

Berries and Juice Glass

Bidding starts at $100

I didn’t set out to paint a Christmas picture, but the green juice glass was the only one that was clean.
The holiday show this past weekend was really great. I painted some portraits, sold some paintings, met some new-to-Croton people, and spent a little time with friends. I love seeing all the creative things that people have spent the last few months making.

Water and Clementine

I ate the clementine (it was yummy) but didn’t drink the water (it’s an old bottle).
This painting will be for sale this weekend at the Croton Artisans Holiday Boutique

Berries and Bottles

There’s still some bright color to be found in the woods and brought back to the warm studio.
This painting will be for sale at the Holiday Artisans Boutique in Croton this weekend.

Half-Hour Portrait Commission

Click Here to Order a Portrait

I had a busy weekend at the Katonah Museum of Art—14 portraits in two days! I’ll have to wait until after Christmas to post the majority of the portraits, but there are a few that I can post now. This little girl was adorable, and she sat surprisingly still for someone so young. When her mom saw the finished painting, she got teary-eyed, and the girl turned her little ruffle-y self around in her seat and without a word wrapped her arms around her mom’s neck. That got me teary-eyed.

I’ll be painting portraits again this weekend, at the Croton Artisans Holiday Boutique at the Croton Municipal Building. Shoot me an email if you’d like to reserve a sitting, or just stop by!

Bottles and Euphorbia Seedling

My Euphorbia plant keeps spitting out seeds, making more seedlings than I know what to do with. This one lives in a shot glass.

It’s such a good feeling to send someone home with a portrait that she loves.
I’ll be painting half-hour portraits at the Katonah Museum of Art this weekend. My schedule is booked, but I’ll also be painting them at the Croton Artisans Holiday Boutique next weekend, Dec. 14-15. Send me an email if you’d like to reserve a portrait sitting either of those days, or just stop by!

These turnips were delicious. At least I thought so. I'm still reserving judgment on this whole still-life thing, but there's something to be said for being able to eat what I paint.
