A quick study—I wanted to capture
the feel of the coach explaining, kids mostly paying attention, and late afternoon
light pouring in behind them.

Walking with Mayzie

Our friends recently adopted a
sweet little dog—Mayzie. On one of those cold, windy days we’ve had so many of
lately, we took a walk along Reservoir Road, Mayzie trotting out ahead, and two
good friends following.

OK, I’ve been whining a little bit
about the continuing cold. But come July, when it’s 90 degrees, I’m going to be
happy to look back at this painting and remember those lovely, crisp winter
nights, walking home from a holiday party as night falls and the lights come
on. Locals, do you see our own little dummy light right there in the center?

It’s entirely possible that people
do not want to hear my observations re. their appearance as I paint them. But
sometimes things just pop out, like, “Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever painted a
young person with white eyebrows before.” What’s cool is that I don’t think
I’ll ever stop seeing new stuff in faces.

Look at this beautiful girl with
the stunning, fiery hair. Some portraits just paint themselves.

Here is one of the portraits I
painted over the weekend at the Flat Iron Gallery. A beautiful woman, inside
and out. Local jewelry aficionados: see the little Rutheny bell earrings?

Sunset at Stone Barns

OK, I know everyone but me is sick
of the snow. But it’s so much more fun to paint than grass. This is one of my
favorite places to run. We’ve had some lovely evening speed workouts here,
coming to the top of the hill just in time to take in the last of the sunset
before plunging back down into the dark woods.

I painted this portrait yesterday,
but it’s one I’ve been wanting to do for a long time! Beautiful woman, amazing
voice.

Road to Minnewaska No. 3

This is a larger one for me, from
a couple photos I took last fall. The highest cliff in the distance is called
Gertrude’s Nose. (I wonder who Gertrude was and what she looked like.) At any
rate, I just love this stretch of road. There’s a sunflower field along here
that I am determined to go back and paint this summer.

Thanks so much to everyone who
came to the reception for my Flat Iron Gallery show on Sunday. It was great to
see everyone, and some of my favorite paintings sold, so all in all, a
successful weekend! I’m working on a larger landscape right now, but in the
meantime, here’s a recent portrait. I like how tween girls have started wearing
their hair in big, thick side braids—it’s very Katniss.
