Bovina No. 1

Well, there’s a lot of glare on this photo; sorry about that. We spent a few days last week in the western Catskills, in a pretty perfect spot. This was our view! Farmland AND mountains—I couldn’t ask for anything more. There was a lovely pond on the property, where I took a very brief, VERY bracing morning swim. Nearby, the town of Bovina has only one store, but it’s just the right store—a general store where the owner, Bea, makes scrumptious sandwiches, and local people and cats gather for meals and conversation. I am definitely going back to this very special place.

It’s so rare that I get to paint honest-to-goodness green eyes. This portrait was commissioned as a surprise gift, so getting it painted and delivered required a little subterfuge on the part of several people, including myself. I did discover that I can lie quite convincingly on the fly when necessary. Not sure that’s a good thing…

And here is the big sister, who was also great fun to paint. Glasses are a challenge in such a short time—if you’ve got the distance between the eyes off, or between the eyes and the wings of the nose, the glasses will be the wrong shape. But it makes me very happy when I get them right!

Sometimes it’s so hard to sit still, especially when you’re little. After a while, some kids’ faces start to reflect how hard they’re concentrating on it, and how much they’d rather be bopping about the room. I can often just smile a little, which brings a hint of a smile in return, and a softer expression, and everything’s good. When I tried that with this little cutie, though, I invariably got a huge grin and a full-body squirm. She was so much fun to paint. Tomorrow I’ll show you her sister.

Summer at Rocky’s

This painting is not for sale, but you can win it! All you have to do is enter and run the Rocky’s 5K on October 25. Summer at Rocky’s will be the grand raffle prize the day of the race. This is a great race—well managed, beautiful, hilly but not too hilly… and it raises money for trail maintenance at the Rockefeller Preserve, one of the most beautiful places around. Every time I run there, I'm reminded what a treasure this place is.
