As the crow flies, this spot is just a couple miles west of home, on the
way to Hilhof Dairy, the organic farm where we buy our milk. I love their milk;
I love this land. I also love Brutus, the 150-pound Great Dane who
lives at the farm. He’s young and a little playful; I try not to get him too worked
up.

Bovina No. 3

I learned something useful, completely
by mistake, with this painting. I like to paint roads, and often the best view is
from the middle of the road. So I take photos from the car. (Usually when I’m
in the passenger seat.) But they’re blurry, which is annoying. So it was a
happy accident that my camera was set to “video” here, and I shot several
seconds before realizing it. Back on my computer, I made a cool discovery—I can
pause that video anywhere I want and get exactly the view I want, in focus.
Cool, eh? So now I take a lot of very boring videos.

Nordhouse Dunes No. 2
This is one of my favorite places
on earth. You have to hike a little bit to get here, but it’s so worth it.
Friends and I once hiked in at sunset, nestled our sleeping bags into the warm,
soft sand, and fell asleep as the stars came out. Let me tell you, in the wee
morning hours, that sand is freezing cold and rock hard. (The stars are
spectacular, though.)

Bovina No. 2

While in Bovina we took a bike
ride along the Catskill Scenic Trail, a rail trail that runs across fields and
small farms and between mountains in Delaware County. So beautiful. I also like
that the trail is unpaved, which makes for a more interesting ride. Along the
way we said hello to some pretty, long-horned cattle and steered clear of an
especially fragrant billy goat.
