Lilacs are such a treat. I
remember as a kid how special it was when the wild lilac on the gravel road near
home was in bloom. Now I have one in my back yard. When I painted this, the sun
was shining but not too hot, a gentle breeze was moving the leaves in and out
of shade, and the air smelled perfect.

Morning on Cleveland Drive No. 1
Cleveland Drive gently wends its
way from the south end of our town to the north. This time of year it’s at its
most beautiful, especially with the morning sun lighting up the flowering trees
and all the new leaves. This section of road is unofficially called Five
Corners, though from this angle you can’t see all three streets that converge
here. (Plus, I chose not to paint the stop sign.)

Tulips

The problem with painting in my
own garden: I am constantly tempted to stop painting and start weeding. I
actually prefer tulips when they show some restraint and hold themselves closed
in the classic tulip shape, but when it’s nice out, these babies throw
themselves open to the sun, revealing the bold patterns inside.

On the Way to School

I like for my daughter to walk to
school on days as nice as these, but there are just some mornings when we don’t
get out the door in time. When I do have to drive her, this view, with the
flowering cherries and magnolias, and the Hudson River in the distance, always
makes me exclaim, “LOOK at that!”

Violets
Happy spring! I didn't have much time yesterday, but I managed to squeeze in a quick little painting. Violets might be my favorite spring flower after apple blossoms, and they're blooming like crazy right now. I tried eating one (I just learned that they're edible), but it had no taste. I'll just stick to painting them, I guess.
