I was originally taken with the
afternoon light and reflections at this end of the pool. But as I painted, what
I found myself focusing on and really enjoying was getting the gestures of the
kids’ bodies right, so that they’re recognizable as individuals.

Swim Team No. 1

A quick study—I wanted to capture
the feel of the coach explaining, kids mostly paying attention, and late afternoon
light pouring in behind them.

Morning on the Reservoir No. 2
I was going to write about the calm, overcast day on which I
painted this—leaves, ducks, fishermen, etc.—but now I don’t feel like it. I
will donate the money from the sale of this painting to the World Food Programme’s
efforts to get emergency food to the Philippines. Bidding starts at $100.

Morning on the Reservoir

A little woodpecker was working away directly above me as I
painted this, chips raining down around me. I turned my face straight up and
watched him for a while as he hung on upside down, tapping away—so beautiful.
This was a changeable day—sunny when I started, with the clouds thickening as I
worked. I like this one.

Black Rock Park No. 3

Black Rock was dark and COLD on
this morning. The sun was touching only the hill in the distance; everything
else was still in shadow. The blue heron swung over for a look at one point,
croaked half-heartedly, and settled down to wait me out on the other side of
the river.
Bidding for this painting starts at $100.

Little Red Boat

I love this little boat; it has personality. The dock was too skinny and tippy to stand on, so I sat down and dangled my feet in the water while painting this one.

Blue Mountain
I painted today at Blue Mountain, one of my favorite places to paint once the fall colors start. Lots of great trails for running, too. It was pretty chilly standing still in the woods, where the morning sun couldn't quite reach me. But it was worth it to be all alone, painting, listening to critters and birds move about, and the occasional plop of something small in the pond. Time to start bringing along a thermos of hot tea.
