Little Red Boat

Little Red Boat, 2018 version. Several people asked about the little red boat paintings last year, but they got snatched up! Here’s my most recent one. Thanks, Mark, for owning the prettiest boats on the river and docking them here in Croton. This painting will be for sale at the Croton Artisans Holiday Show at the municipal building this weekend.

There were a few days last week when it was just too beautiful to stay inside. So I took my paints down to the river and held onto my hat.

Cranberry Bog

One of my favorite spots in the world… There aren’t really any cranberries growing here, but this beautiful little bog gets a cranberry color sometimes, and that’s what we call it. Occasionally in the summer you can sit on that far hillside and watch a beaver or two swimming around down below. This painting will also be at the Farmhouse show tomorrow!

Cocktail Hour

This baby’s a big one for me—24x36”. Nearing the end of a winter’s day on our wonderful marsh, before the snow came. I took lots of photos from this spot this winter, at all times of day. Evening and early morning were my favorite. I ended up painting early evening, with its promise of a warm house to return to, and a glass of wine. “Cocktail Hour” will be hanging at the Triumph Brewing Company of Princeton show as of April 14. 

Croton River at Quaker Bridge

The Croton River is so lovely. I think because no matter where you are, you get a mix of glassy water and rapids, which makes for some nice light and dark contrasts. It’s especially apparent this time of year, when the leaves are off the trees, and all of those pesky colorful reflections are gone.

Sunsets over the Hudson are often just spectacular. I really should hang out there at the end of the day more. This painting and others are for sale this weekend at the Croton Artisans show at the municipal building. I have one spot left for a portrait today and a few spots open tomorrow. It’s going to be fun!

Here’s a sunnier day, when the sycamores still had their leaves, looking downstream toward Quaker Bridge. There are the remains of an old dam (Croton people: a dam, right? Not a bridge?) going across here, which is why it looks like it was painted in the middle of the river. I’ll be selling this painting at the Holiday Boutique this weekend; until then it is for sale on my Etsy site.

This sunset was spectacular the night of a recent art opening high on a hill. But what struck me was that almost everyone involved in the event was wearing oversized round tortoiseshell glasses. I am exaggerating only a tiny bit. I asked the gallery owner (major tortoiseshells) about this fact, but she and her bespectacled associate looked at me blankly. So I still don’t know what was up with that. And I am still curious.

Cows and Crows

I am pretty sure that one of these tiny calves is the one that we saw a few weeks ago, moments after his birth. It seems odd that there are TWO calves this time of year, but there they are. It was one of those days with a bite to the air, but the sun still warm enough to make you happy. My favorite parts of this painting are the crows flying through.

I painted this from a photo that my daughter took this summer, by the side of the road in Michigan. I often shy away from painting foregrounds, opting for distance views, but this one forced me to paint the stuff that was close up. And I liked it.

I painted these cows this summer, but I’m so glad that I waited until now to post this painting, because now I get to tell you about what I saw this past Saturday. One of these cows (one of the black ones) gave birth just minutes before we happened by. First the little baby was just a black lump in the grass that his mama was licking, and then he struggled to his feet, stood for a few seconds, then fell. Each time he stayed up for a little longer. Very quickly he could take a few wobbly steps, and she started leading him a few feet at a time farther into the field, always staying very close, until he could really pretty much walk. It was amazing.

Summer at Rocky’s

This painting is not for sale, but you can win it! All you have to do is enter and run the Rocky’s 5K on October 25. Summer at Rocky’s will be the grand raffle prize the day of the race. This is a great race—well managed, beautiful, hilly but not too hilly… and it raises money for trail maintenance at the Rockefeller Preserve, one of the most beautiful places around. Every time I run there, I'm reminded what a treasure this place is.

I’ve been trying to find a vantage spot from which to capture this view for a long time, and I finally found it! Who would think a view this beautiful could be had right near the train station? The morning storm clouds were moving out, bringing in some steamy sun. I did edit the scene a bit as I painted, leaving out the cars in the parking lot—who needs ‘em?

This one is from a photo I took a week or two ago, when the trees were flowering like mad. Now it’s mostly green, though there is still a bit of nice variation in the greens. I painted it on canvas, which I like for its texture, but I definitely do not like the give of canvas under my brush; I much prefer a nice, hard board.

Croton Point, Evening

On Croton Point one recent evening, the light was incredible—pouring in from the west and hitting the grasses at the top of the hill and the clouds above, while the woods cast shadows on the foreground. I don’t know if there was something special about this particular evening, or if Croton Point is often lit like this at the end of the day, but I’ll have to find out.

Spring at the Tourne

This is my second painting of the swamp at the Tourne. I hope to paint many more. It was a lovely spring day, and I went for a run in the surrounding woods and hills. Somehow, I got off on a side trail that skirted the very east edge of the swamp, which was interesting until it got too rocky and overgrown, and then it was annoying. I abandoned it, trusting that I’d find the main trail sooner or later, and I did, and all was well.

Lilacs are such a treat. I remember as a kid how special it was when the wild lilac on the gravel road near home was in bloom. Now I have one in my back yard. When I painted this, the sun was shining but not too hot, a gentle breeze was moving the leaves in and out of shade, and the air smelled perfect.

Spring is happening too quickly! This painting is only a couple of days old, and already the trees are speeding toward a more uniform green. I treasure this small window of time, when there are so many colors and so much variety in the landscape.

Here are two friends, having a discussion at our village Earth Day celebration, while the band plays and the sun shines. I love how they’re both clasping their little hands in front of their chests.
